Recently there was a deck collapse in California that sadly killed 6 people. Deck collapses kill people more often than we would like to know. Fortunately, it is something that we can help prevent and help save lives. There are some simple thing to look for on your own deck to make sure it is safe.
- Ensure that the ledger board is secured to the home/structure with lag bolts
- Make sure the railings are secure
- The posts should rest on concrete footings that are a proper depth
- Baluster spacings should be small enough that a child could not get stuck
In addition to this, regularly check for wood rot or other damage. And as always, make sure you have a thorough inspection!
