Adjustable steel columns are used in many homes. But what are they and what is their purpose?

Sometimes called beam jacks or screw jacks, adjustable steel columns provide structural support through hollow steel posts. In order to adjust the post’s height, an attached threaded mechanism is commonly used.

Simple Facts

– Most commonly, they are used in basements.

– Although they are normally found as single-piece columns, they can also be manufactured as multi-part assembles or ‘telescopic steel columns’.

– Finally, they are sometimes called ‘lally’ columns in some locations around the United States. However, this same term also covers non-adjustable and filled columns which can lead to a little confusion.
