When the temperature is high there is nothing better than a refreshing dip in a swimming pool. If you are fortunate to have a swimming pool in your backyard, it’s important to be alert to the dangers associated with them. Let’s consider some of the ways you can ensure poolside safety.

A swimming pool can be an especially dangerous place when there are small children in the household. Sadly, a large number of youngsters, particularly those under the age of 5, lose their lives each year from accidental drowning. This can happen so quickly that a child may have already drowned before anyone realizes they are missing.

What steps should you take to ensure the swimming pool area is a safe one? Perhaps one of the most effective ways is to have a barrier around the pool area. Whatever type of pool barrier you install, whether it is in the form of fencing or walls, etc. the important thing is that it must prevent a child from gaining unsupervised access to the pool area. This means it should stop a small child from being able to go under or climb over it. Remember too that pool barriers are not only for inground pools but should also be used for above ground pools, hot tubs, and spas.

The exterior walls of your home can also act as a pool barrier but any doors or windows that have direct access to the pool area need to be secured. Although locking the door is important it is not completely effective, so it is a good idea to fit doors and windows with alarms that are designed to trigger a warning sound if anyone exits or enters them. You will want to ensure that the sound is both distinct and loud enough to be recognized and heard in any part of the house.

Following pool safety guidelines will ensure an enjoyable and relaxing backyard experience.
