Many people will be getting together to enjoy some time off this month. With more time spent in the home though, this can also mean that there are increased risks of accidents within the home. With that in mind we wanted to point out some things you can do to ensure you stay safe.

Here are some reminders

As we discuss a lot, fire can be big issue in the home. Never leave candles unattended, and be sure to keep them away from any flammable materials. A very important thing to check is string lights for any signs of frayed wires or broken bulbs etc. Most importantly, do not let children or pets be around these items.

Before using, take some time to make sure your fireplace and chimney is in good order. Check that the flue is open. Also, remove anything surrounding the fireplace that could catch fire easily. As tempting as it is, it is not wise to throw wrappers in the fire.

Now is a good time to test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to make sure they are working and don’t require batteries. Its also wise to have a fire evacuation plan, and make sure your guests are aware of it. Other fire hazards to be aware of are leaving the stove unattended and if there will be smokers in the house, make sure that no smoldering cigarette butts placed in the trash.

It is essential to keep a close eye on children. Make sure to keep sharp objects such as scissors and knives out of reach of small children. Were you aware that poinsettias are actually poisonous? Don’t allow children or even pets to touch them.

While these may be obvious reminders, it is still a good thing to keep them in mind.
