Home security is important for any homeowner and, while you may do all you can to ensure your home is safe, have you thought about the safety of your exterior doors, particularly the locks? Were you aware that this is one way an intruder can enter your home? How do they do this?

One method of entry an intruder might use is with a bump key.  This is a type of key, specially cut so that it can pick a pin-tumbler lock.  How likely is it that your doors have pin-tumbler locks? Well, considering that pin-tumbler locks are some of the most common kinds of lock in the world, it’s quite possible that your doors have them.

Are bump keys easy to get hold of? Unfortunately, bump keys are not that hard to find and to get the right one you just have to know the make of lock the key will be used for.  Other factors that make the use of bump keys appealing is that it is relatively easy to learn to use one and takes little time to master.

What can you do? Bump proof locks are available, but they are more expensive and harder to find.  You may find bump resistant locks are a better option.  Another way to protect your home is to install an additional system of security that will alert you to anyone trying to gain entry to your property.
