Finding a good, honest trades person might feel like a challenge sometimes.  If you have recently relocated to a different area, perhaps you are looking for someone to work on your home.  Here are a few warning signs you should look out for that would indicate whether the trades person is honest or not:

You will no doubt have a number of questions to ask the person before you hire them.  If they are honest, they won’t have any problems being asked for their credentials and if they are insured for the job etc.  If they are too pushy or want an immediate answer about hiring them, its probably best not to hire them.

If you call or email a company, try to obtain a quote for the work before you disclose your address.  Sometimes a person will give you a different price depending on how affluent a neighborhood you live in.

While most companies will require a small deposit for the job they will be doing, be wary of anyone wanting a large deposit or the whole amount up front.  Its also a good idea to get a fixed price for the work and put it all in writing.  This way, you won’t have to worry about those unforeseen extras that are often added after the job is completed.

Don’t be afraid to ask the tradesperson about previous jobs they have done, the experience they have and even their address.  There are many honest tradespeople out there and they will not mind providing the information you need.  Following these few suggestions will help you find the right, honest person for the job.
