We have so much choice these days when it comes to building materials, with something to fit all tastes and budgets.  Flooring is one of those areas that has a lot to choose from.  It can also be a hard decision to make as its something that covers a large area of the home.  We’re going to consider one type of flooring, laminate.  Let’s see whether or not it’s a good option for your home.

Laminate flooring is a great option for a number of reasons.  It is good for the budget conscious as its usually inexpensive and easy to install so, for a relatively low cost, you can transform a room with new flooring.  There is a great range of styles and colors to choose from with laminate flooring as well.  While most fall under the hardwood look category, you can also find different effects such as marble or granite.  Although laminate flooring is generally constructed of fiberboard with a melamine resin, it is installed much like hardwood flooring is with pieces or panels that are designed to fit together to form the entire floor.

There are a few issues to be aware of with laminate flooring.  It can sometimes move or shift.  It is also important to ensure the subfloor that you are installing it on is in decent condition and not wet or damp, this could cause the laminate floor to start to buckle or warp.  As mentioned, laminate flooring is made with melamine resin, this contains the toxic chemical formaldehyde which may not be something you want in your flooring.  However, there are other options with less toxins available.

Its easy to see that laminate flooring is a good option due to its good range of choices and lower cost, but make sure the subfloor is in good condition before its installed to prevent it from warping.
