As we mentioned in our previous blog this month, perhaps 2020 is the year you will be moving to a new house. Moving can be one of the most stressful things you can do so, what are some ways you can alleviate some of the stresses and hassles of moving house while at the same time doing so in an environmentally responsible way?
Advanced preparation is the key here. It’s a good idea to begin with sorting through belongings you haven’t used in at least a year and think about whether you will ever use them again. Start putting items in various piles, for example, one could be for donating and another pile for a yard sale, etc. If possible, try to reduce the number of items that go into the garbage by recycling as much as possible. This is much easier to do well ahead of moving day.
There are some items that could be very bad for the environment if simply placed in the garbage, these include batteries, light bulbs, electronic equipment, paint cans, and chemicals to mention just a few. Again, going through these items in advance will give you time to sort them and dispose of them in the proper manner. If you are not sure how to get rid of certain items, it’s a good idea to contact your local environmental agency who can advise you of the best way to safely dispose of them.
Sorting through your belongings and simplifying well ahead of moving day will, not only ease the pressure of moving to a new home but also give you peace of mind that you have done it in an environmentally friendly way.
