When a thief is looking for a house to break into they look for the easiest target, somewhere they can break in quickly and without being seen. If you want to discourage would-be intruders, here are a few ways to make your home less attractive to them:
Your properties landscaping plays a role in discouraging a burglar. For example, if there are a lot of shrubs and trees over the home’s entrance and windows, this will give a thief the ability to break in without being seen so, make sure these areas are not hidden from view. Fencing around a property can also discourage an intruder but you will also want to make sure this doesn’t act as a place to shield from the view of onlookers.
Motion sensored lighting on each side of the exterior of your house is another good deterrent. If you are planning to be away it is also a good idea to leave some lights on inside the house to give the impression you are home.
Another easy entry point for a thief is sliding glass doors. Have locks fitted to the top and bottom of each door. An additional security measure is to simply place a cut off broom handle or similar size piece of wood into the tracks of the door.
Make sure your exterior doors and windows are good quality and solid construction. You should also check them for signs of deterioration. Doors should be fitted with deadbolt locks. If you feel you need extra window security you can fit them with window bars or heavy-duty wire screens, just remember that these should be easy for the home occupants to exit them in the event of an emergency.
While simple, these suggestions will help to make your home a lot less inviting to an intruder.
