While we do our best to keep our homes as safe as possible the fact remains that many accidents take place each year within the home.  Among the causes of these accidents are tip-over hazards, with children being among those most at risk of serious injury.  So, how can you prevent your furniture items from becoming a tip-over danger?

If you purchase flat pack furniture make sure you follow ALL the safety instructions.  For example, they will usually come with straps or L brackets so that they can be secured to a wall, make sure you do this so that you prevent the item from tipping over.

When shopping around for pieces of furniture, select items that have a sturdy and wide base as this will minimize the risk of them tipping over.  If the item has shelves or drawers, store heavier objects in the lower drawers or shelves which will help to stabilize the unit and prevent it from becoming top-heavy.

One item that children will often try to grab is the television.  Choose a tv stand that is low to the ground and keep the television as far back as possible on it.  It’s also important to store electrical cables out of a child’s reach.

Another thing young children love to do is climb, especially if they are trying to reach an object they desire. Think about keeping certain items out of a child’s view as well as out of their reach which will eliminate the temptation altogether.

Yes, assessing the potential for tip-over accidents in our home will help keep it the safe and secure place we need it to be.
