Sinkholes are becoming more and more common these days.  Whether they are caused by natural means or are human induced they have the ability to, not only create massive amounts of damage to buildings and roads, but they can cause serious injury or even kill people.  What, then, are some of the warning signs that would indicate a sinkhole is forming?  We will consider a few signs.  It’s important to point out, though, that these signs could be caused by other issues and you should consider whether you live in an area prone to sinkholes first.

Have a check on and around your property for changes.  What do we mean by that? Well, have you noticed water starting to pool in areas that have never had this problem? Are plants and shrubs starting to die off?  This could be because a sinkhole is draining away water from the area.  You might also start to notice trees and fences beginning to lean, and posts, foundations and trees etc. that are usually underground, start to become exposed.  Some other big warning signs to look out for are cracks forming in circular patterns in the ground, rapid ground subsidence and sudden openings in the ground.

Inside the home there are also signs to look out for.  Have you started to notice windows and doors are no longer closing properly?  Are there cracks forming in the floors or walls of the home?  If you have well water, is it looking muddy or cloudy?  These are all possible signs that a sinkhole is forming.  As we mentioned in the beginning, if you are living in an area that is prone to sinkholes, these are all warning signs to watch out for.  Even if you are unsure whether or not you live in a sinkhole prone area, its good to have these things checked out to ensure the safety of your household.
