Were you aware that on average approximately 3,000 people perish every year in the States from house fire related causes.  Many of these fatalities could have been avoided if there had been enough smoke detectors in the home or if the ones they had were working properly.  Yes, although these devices may seem insignificant, they could save your life in the event of a fire.  With that in mind, here are some things to think about:

Smoke detectors, and also carbon monoxide detectors, are only going to effectively alert you to a fire if they are working correctly.  Its important to NEVER disconnect a smoke alarm.  It can be tempting to do so, especially if you burn food, but reconnecting it again can easily slip our mind.  Also, once a month, check each one and make sure it does not require new batteries.

While the amount of smoke detectors you will need depends on the size of your home, a good rule is to install one on every inhabited level of the home, which would include the basement and garage.  Its also a good idea to have one in each bedroom if possible.

Another good idea is to prepare a fire exit strategy, this would be crucial in getting the household out of the home in the event of a fire.  Educate each member of the household as to what to do if a fire breaks out.  Periodically perform a fire drill, preferably at night time as this is when a household would be most at risk.  Set off the homes smoke detectors to see if they effectively wake up every member of the household.

Yes, being conscious of fire safety in the home is vital.  Having enough, working smoke detectors, could save your life.
