The thought of entering an under-home crawlspace is not always the most pleasant of prospects but, worse still, it is very likely you will encounter some hazardous conditions down there.  Here are just some of the dangers often lurking underneath the home:

Firstly, when you think about the type of conditions found in a crawlspace its easy to see why there may be dangers, it is usually a damp, dark space that is left undisturbed for long periods of time.  This can provide the ideal environment for a number of creatures such as rodents, insects or other animals.  Some of these may even be poisonous or dangerous when they feel threatened or cornered and remember, getting out of their way may prove difficult in such a tight space.

Another issue you could face is standing water, sewage, mold and fungi.  As we know, all of these have serious health hazards associated with them.

Structural damage to the home can present a huge danger to anyone entering a crawlspace.  If you suspect that there is damage of this kind, it is best to avoid entering the space until it has been inspected and you know what you are dealing with.

If the hazards mentioned above don’t put you off from entering a crawlspace, make sure you are well prepared by wearing the appropriate protective clothing and equipment and always have someone nearby who knows you are down there that can help if you run into problems.
