The homes toilet is perhaps one of the most underappreciated areas of the house, however, if a toilet stops working for any reason, it can plunge a household into chaos. We thoroughly check all bathrooms and toilets during our detailed home inspections but, is there anything that you as the homeowner can look for that would indicate whether the toilet is not working as it should?

The toilet bowl is a good place to start your inspection. Check it thoroughly and look to see if there are any chips or cracks developing in the porcelain. It might not appear to be a serious problem but, did you know that a home inspector would list a toilet as faulty if it had those kinds of problems?

Nowadays many homes have more than one toilet and its important to check every one of them. Another test you can do is to flush each toilet and observe how much time it takes for the water tank to fill back up. Is it taking an unusually long time? In this case, the toilet may need fixing. You also want to check if the toilet takes a long time to flush as this could also be an issue.

Another common problem a toilet can experience is continuous running water. While many don’t view this as a serious issue, this is a big waste of water not to mention money, especially if you have a private well as it could also be damaging the pump.

Considering the average person will flush the toilet around 2500 times in a year, it’s good to include the toilet on your list of regular home maintenance tasks.
