Maintaining a healthy indoor environment is important for everyone but there are many factors that can affect this, one of these is air quality.  Your homes HVAC system is an area that requires regular maintenance because, if this is not taken care of, it can produce hazardous indoor air quality.  As a homeowner one of the best things you can for your HVAC system is to regularly change the filters.  So, how do you know when it’s time to change the filter?

Outside dirt and dust will find its way indoors

As a general rule, you should have a technician service the HVAC system once a year, but the filters should really be changed every 3 months depending on its level of use.  It might require changing more often than that, perhaps even every month.  You should consider changing it this often if you have pets or a large family.  This is because there is a lot more dust, dirt and pet dander circulating around the home.  If you smoke indoors or a member of the household suffers with allergies, this is another reason to change the filter every month.  Airborne particles outside will generally find there way inside.  This is something to consider if there have been any wildfires in the area, if there is construction going on around your home or if you live in an area with a lot of agriculture surrounding the home.

There are other times when the filter should immediately be changed.  This would be if the filter becomes damaged.  If the filter ends up becoming damp or wet for any reason, this is another reason to change it immediately as mold can quickly develop and make for a very hazardous indoor air quality.

Yes, good home maintenance is the key to saving money on big repairs later on and helps preserve a healthy home environment.
