If you live in an older home, 40 years old or more, then you may be worried about lead or lead based materials being an issue.  We have found out more regarding the dangers of lead in recent years, with those most at risk being unborn babies, babies and young children. So, what are some things you should be aware of regarding lead dangers in the home?

One of the main problems you could encounter is damage to lead paint, causing it to chip, peel or form dust.  This would be a concern both inside and outside the home.  Even the soil which surrounds the home could contain lead from this paint.  Lead dust could easily be inhaled or touched (especially by young children) which then becomes a health hazard.

Another place lead could be found in an old home is the homes piping.  If lead piping was used in your plumbing system, then it could affect your drinking water.

Even if your home is not old, the furniture it contains could contain lead.  If you enjoy old furniture and antiques, you might want to be careful that there is no damaged lead paint etc. found on them.  These could have the same problems as lead paint found in an old home.  Its an important thing to check, particularly around small children.

As we can see, there are areas in the home that you might want to have checked out to make sure that lead does not pose a health risk to you and your household.
