Trees are used in landscaping for a number of reasons. They not only add beauty but from a practical standpoint, they can also provide a level of privacy that so many homeowners are looking for. But, what about if a tree or trees are very close to the house? Could they cause any damage to the building? Let’s address some concerns many homeowners have.

Probably one of the greatest concerns a homeowner has when a tree is very close to the home is whether its roots will damage the foundations. This will depend on the size of the tree, etc. but if the tree has very large roots, these could begin to grow underneath the foundation, causing it to lift. You may also find that if the foundations of the home have existing cracks in them the tree’s roots will find their way into those cracks.

Another issue that often arises when a tree is close to a building is falling branches and tree limbs. The greatest danger is when they fall and damage the roof, cut off power or communication lines, or worse still fall on somebody. An accumulation of branches and leaves can also block gutters and drains. If these are not cleared out frequently this could cause some structural issues over time. You may also find that trees allow pests like insects and rodents easier access to all levels of the home.

Trees too close to a building are a fire risk and can even aid with the spreading of a fire through the home. In locations at risk of wildfire, this would be of particular concern.

How can you reduce the risk if a tree is too close to your home? The first thing to do is find out the condition of the tree. A tree that is dead or dying will pose more of a risk. You should also have the trees trimmed. Another good idea is to have the home inspected to find out if any trees have started causing any structural issues.
